WINNEMUCCA - If the first two games are any indication, teams in the Division I-A North are going to be in for a long year when they play the Lowry High School freshmen girls basketball team.
The Lady Bucks made their home debut this past weekend and hardly broke a sweat in a 50-8 victory over South Tahoe on Friday and 55-5 win over Dayton on Saturday to improve to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in league play.
"It is hard to play games like that," said LHS head coach Amy Jenkins. "There is not much you can do. I am not going to tell my girls not to play. I have 12 solid girls, who can do whatever I asked them to do. Right now, they are working hard and I am just trying to play all the girls an equal amount of time."
Lowry scored the first 38 points of the game against South Tahoe, when the Vikings scored a bucket with 4:02 left in the third quarter. The Lady Bucks raced out to a 22-0 advantage in the first quarter with eight of those points from Audrey Snow. Hannah Hillyer had four points in the opening eight minutes of play and Amaya Herrera, Kenadee Jeppsen, Kenadee Miller, Alexis Allen and Alyssa Campbell each had baskets in the first quarter.
"I just wanted to see what kind of team South Tahoe was in that first quarter," Jenkins said. "When we got up 22-0 we weren't going to run a press and just played the game out."
Lowry continued to build its lead with an 8-0 run in the second quarter off of baskets by Herrera, Allen and Jeppsen and two free throws by Snow.
Hillyer started off the third quarter with three consecutive baskets and McKenna Jones connected on a short shot to put the Lady Bucks up 38-0. South Tahoe scored its first points midway through the third quarter, when Lowry finished the quarter on a 6-1 run to lead 44-3.
A basket by Campbell with 1:27 left in the third gave Lowry a 40-point lead at 42-2 and the game was played with a running clock under the NIAA 40-point mercy rule.
Lowry led by as many as 45 points, at 50-5 in the fourth quarter, when South Tahoe scored the final three points of the game.
Eight different players scored for the Lady Bucks with Hillyer and Snow leading the way with 12 points apiece. Allen scored six points and Jones, Herrera, Campbell, Jeppsen and Miller scoring four each.
It was much of the same on Saturday afternoon as Lowry had little trouble with Dayton. The Lady Bucks used baskets by Campbell, Brooklyn Backus and Herrera to build a 6-0 advantage and they never trailed. The Dust Devils cut the deficit to 6-2, only to see Lowry score the final 11 points of the first quarter to lead 17-2. Kaity Sample and Snow had four points each during that run.
Dayton scored the first basket of the second quarter, but managed just one point in the final 23 minutes of the game. Lowry finished the first half on a 15-0 run to lead 32-4 at halftime.
The Lady Bucks collected the first 11 points of the third quarter to close out a 26-0 spurt and lead 43-4. A basket by Herrera with 1:28 left in the third quarter gave the Lady Bucks a 40-point advantage and the game was played with a running clock to the end.
Eleven different players scored for Lowry with Snow and Herrera netting 13 and 10 points, respectively. Hillyer scored seven, Sample six, Aimee Brandon five, Jones, Campbell and Miller four each and Jeppsen, Backus and Allen had two points apiece.
Lowry is off until Thursday, Jan. 3, when it travels to Sparks for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
"I think we are going to have a good year," Jenkins said. "I am excited for what the rest of the season holds for us."
