Lowry freshmen football team knocks off Wooster, earns first win of the year

Bucks host South Tahoe on Thursday

WINNEMUCCA - After opening the season with a tough loss to Truckee, it did not take the Lowry High School freshmen team to get into the win column.

The Buckaroos traveled to Reno this past Thursday to face Wooster and beat the Colts 30-6. Lowry, who turned the ball over five times against Truckee, did not have one turnover against Wooster.

"It felt pretty good to get the kids their first career high school win," said LHS coach Brent Riemersma. "We improved a lot in our blocking, tackling and protection of the ball."

The coach added that the offensive line of William Bourland, Bryan Ramos, Salvador Perez, Kyle Myers, Derrick Lott, and Christian Collazo allowed running backs Jackson Brown and Darin Nelson to run for more than 80 yards each.

Quarterback Jed Teichert also had a big game running, according to the coach with the offensive line allowing him to pass the ball effectively. Receivers Joe Taylor and Collazo both had catches for big gains.

Lowry (1-1) jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter after forcing Wooster to go three-and-out on its first possession. The Buckaroos drove 60 yards on their initial drive of the game, with Nelson scoring on a 3-yard run. Teichert added the 2-point conversion.

The Colts could not produce anything on offense once again and were forced to punt to the Buckaroos. Lowry kept the ball for the rest of the first period and increased the advantage to 16-0, when Jackson Brown scored on a 7-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. Teichert connected with Collazo on a pass for the 2-point conversion and a 16-0 lead.

A blocked punt by Michael Rangel midway through the second quarter led to Lowry's third touchdown of the night. The Buckaroos took over possession inside the Colts' 40-yard line and on fourth down Teichert hooked up with Taylor for a 25-yard touchdown pass. Brown added the 2-point conversion to give Lowry a 24-0 lead at halftime.

The Lowry defense stepped up once again in the third quarter, with Rangel intercepting a Wooster pass. The Buckaroos wasted no time in making the Colts pay for the mistake, with Teichert scoring on a 5-yard run to up the advantage to 30-0 after the missed extra point.

Wooster avoided the shutout late in the third quarter, scoring on a 40-yard screen pass. The Colts had just three plays that went for more than 10 yards.

Lowry returns to its home field on Thursday to play South Tahoe at 5 p.m.

"It was a great overall effort by the entire team," Riemersma said. "We still have a lot to improve on, but it was good to get the win and the backups some substantial playing time. We look forward to building on this win and playing South Tahoe."
