WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School freshmen football team had the task of facing one of the toughest Division III junior varsity football teams in the state on Friday, Sept. 21, in Lovelock.
The Buckaroos (2-2 overall, 2-0 Division I-A) played even with the Mustangs for much of the first quarter, before Pershing County pulled away for the 46-6 win.
"It looked like we were going to stay in the game with them," said LHS head coach Greg Scott. "We tied the game in the first quarter, but Pershing County was just able to make some plays to win the game."
The Mustangs scored on their opening possession of the game, only to see the Buckaroos tie the game at 6-6 on a touchdown pass from Omar Guerrero to Michael Donovan in the first quarter.
From there, all the breaks went to Pershing County, which slowly pulled away for the win. The Mustangs picked up one touchdown, on a blown play, when they fumbled near the line of scrimmage and a Pershing County teammate picked the ball up off the ground and ran for the score.
"That is what kind of game it was for us," Scott said. "We played well at times and moved the ball, but mistakes ended up costing us."
Lowry hosted Elko on Thursday and results were not available at press time. The Buckaroos are back on the road to play Sparks on Friday, Oct. 5, at 4:30 p.m.
