WINNEMUCCA - Mother Nature has been kind for a most of the fall, but she was in a not-so-giving-mood last Wednesday night.
The Lowry High School freshmen football team wrapped up its season against Churchill County in a game that was played in snowy and cold conditions.
The weather and the slippery field hindered both schools, with a number of turnovers as the ball was hard to handle.
The Greenwave scored four touchdowns in the first quarter on their way to a 40-0 victory over the Buckaroos. With the loss, Lowry finished the year 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the Division I-A North.
"It was tough conditions to play in," said LHS head coach Greg Scott. "We just dug ourselves a quick hole and could never recover. I like the way we played in the second half. We were moving the ball again but stopped ourselves with fumbles."
It took Churchill County just 13 seconds to score as Gabe Cooper ran the opening kickoff back 80 yards for a 6-0 advantage after the missed extra point.
The Buckaroos converted first downs on its first two drives of the game, but one ended with an interception and another on a punt.
The Greenwave added to its lead midway through the first quarter, when Cameron Matzen scored on a 10-yard run. That capped off a 55-yard drive, which was aided by three Lowry defensive penalties.
Following a Lowry interception, Matzen reached the end zone once again for Churchill County on a 15-yard run. Matzen added his third touchdown of the first quarter on a 70-yard punt return, giving the Greenwave a 26-0 lead.
As the weather worsened in the second quarter, the two schools traded turnovers and punts. Lowry and Churchill County combined for six turnovers in the second half.
Alan Mayorga gave the Buckaroos their best field position of the night as he ran the second-half kick back to the Greenwave 30 yard-line. However, Lowry could not capitalize on the good field position.
Matzen collected his fifth touchdown of the night, scoring on a 5-yard run with 3:12 left in the game.
"The guys played hard all season and that is all I can ask," Scott said. "They are a great group of kids. I love this group. They were fun and made it fun as a coach. I am looking forward to see how they grow in the next couple of years."
