WINNEMUCCA - For one half of play, it looked like the Lowry High School freshmen football team was going to snap its two-game losing streak.
The Buckaroos (2-4 overall, 2-2 Division I-A) traveled to Sparks on Friday, Oct. 5, and held a 6-0 halftime lead over the Railroaders. However, Sparks shut out Lowry in the final 24 minutes of the game to earn the 26-6 victory.
"We looked good in the first half," said LHS head coach Greg Scott. "They just wore us down in the second half. By the end of the game we looked like a mash unit. We were beat up by the end of the game."
Wyatt Warn scored the Buckaroos lone touchdown in the first half on a rushing touchdown, and the Lowry defense made it hold up until halftime.
Sparks got on the board quickly in the third quarter with a touchdown, and added three more scores in the second half for the final outcome.
Scott praised the play of Warn, Shawn Mentaberry and Jesus Martinez.
"We knew what Sparks was going to do," Scott said. "We just had a few mental breakdowns and missed a couple of assignments on defense. When we moved the ball on offense, we hurt ourselves with fumbles or interceptions."
Lowry played at Spring Creek Thursday night and results were not available at press time. The Buckaroos host Fernley next Thursday at 5 p.m.
"We have three more weeks to get better," Scott said. "We will get after it in practice and look to improve."
