WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School freshmen football team could not keep the momentum going from a 20-point win at Spring Creek the week before as the Buckaroos returned home this past Thursday night against to face Fernley.
The Vaqueros raced out to a 28-0 halftime lead en route to a 47-13 victory over the Buckaroos. With the loss, Lowry dropped to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in the Division I-A North.
"If we played like we did in the second half, it would have been a different game," said LHS head coach Greg Scott. "We moved the ball down the field but shot ourselves in the foot with mistakes. We are just not good enough to overcome that. We caught them off guard a bit by running the single wing."
Fernley scored twice in the first quarter and added two more touchdowns in the second period. The Vaqueros final score of the first half came with less than a minute to play, after intercepting a Buckaroo pass.
The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter, with Dylan Riddle scoring for Lowry to make the score 34-7.
The Vaqueros added two more touchdowns to increase the margin to 47-7, when Riddle scored the Buckaroos' second touchdown in the closing seconds.
"The kids played hard and I cannot fault the effort," Scott said. "It was good to get that score at the end. It wasn't like Fernley ran over the top of us. We just made some errors."
Lowry closes out its season on Wednesday when it hosts Churchill County at 5 p.m. The game is a day earlier than normal do to the Nevada Day holiday.
