WINNEMUCCA - With nearly two weeks off, Lowry High School freshmen boys coach Grant Beatty was not sure how his team would respond as it returned to the floor Thursday, Jan. 2, in Sparks.
Any worries were put to bed early as Lowry raced out to an 18-0 lead in the first quarter on its to a 41-28 victory over the Railroaders. The Buckaroos improved to 3-0 in the Division III North and 8-3 overall.
"This was the first time all year the guys came ready to play from the start," Beatty said. "I was a little worried about how we would come out and play, but the guys played well."
Brady Lange scored the first eight points of the game for the Buckaroos and Jed Teichert also contributed a couple of buckets in the opening eight minutes to give Lowry its large advantage.
"Our defense is looking good right now," said the coach. "We are taking care of the ball well. We worked on our half-court trap over the break and we did a good job of running that against Sparks."
Lowry was scheduled to play Truckee last Saturday but that game was moved to Friday, Jan. 17, to coincide with a road trip to Reed on Saturday, Jan. 18.
The Buckaroos are back on the road this weekend, beginning with Fernley tonight at 5 p.m. Lowry moves on to Fallon on Saturday, to face Churchill County at 12:30 p.m.
"We have definitely grown as a team and they are understanding what freshmen basketball is all about," Beatty said. "They are starting to get their confidence going. They are a good group and athletic and I think they are starting to figure that out."[[In-content Ad]]
