WINNEMUCCA - Just like in the previous three matchups, the Lowry High School freshmen boys made quick work of Spring Creek, beating the Spartans 64-34 in the final home game of the season for the Buckaroos on Tuesday night.
Lowry (22-1 overall, 10-0 Division I-A, 5-0 Ruby Mountain) defeated Spring Creek for the fourth time this season, extending its winning streak to 14 games in the process. The only loss for the Buckaroos this year was to Reed in the championship game of the State Farm Classic in Reno in December.
"We were able to get off to a quick start," said LHS head coach Grant Beatty. "It's tough to stay motivated when you play a team so many times. It was good to get all the kids some playing time."
Nathan Lutzow scored 13 of his 17 points in the first quarter, while Jacob Hales added six points and Christian Riddle and Jared Taylor each had baskets to give the Buckaroos a 19-0 lead.
Spring Creek went scoreless for the first six minutes of the game.
Hales collected six more points in the second period and Lowry picked up baskets from Brian Shettler, Taylor and Lutzow to build a 37-13 advantage at halftime.
"Jacob had a good night," Beatty said. "He had a season high for points tonight. It seemed like he could not miss."
The Buckaroos led by as many as 26 points at the start of the third quarter, but the Spartans used a run through the middle of the period to cut the margin to 18 points, at 45-27.
Spring Creek got no closer as Lowry responded with an 11-0 run to close out the third period, giving the Buckaroos a 56-27 lead. Taylor had six points in that stretch, while Hales hit a 3-point field goal and Riddle also added a bucket.
Brody Goucher netted the first six points of the fourth period, which allowed Lowry to push the advantage to 34 points, when Spring Creek closed out the game by scoring six of the final eight points.
Taylor and Lutzow paced the Buckaroos with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Riddle was the third Lowry player in double figures with 15 points, while Goucher added six. Riddle had four points and Dominic Diaz and Shettler finished with two points apiece.
Lowry concludes its season today as it travels to West Wendover for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
