Lowry football, volleyball teams head to regional playoffs this weekend

WINNEMUCCA - The Division I-A North regional playoffs get underway this weekend for the Lowry High School football and volleyball teams.

The Buckaroo football team finished 8-1 in the Division I-A North and are in a three-way tie for first place, along with Churchill County and Elko. However, when the tiebreakers were broken down, the Buckaroos earned the No. 3 seed.

Lowry travels to Elko on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Indians won the regular season matchup 26-6, which is the only on the season for the Buckaroos. Fernley travels to Fallon to face Churchill County in the other semifinal meeting.

In the Division I-A South, Desert Pine travels to Faith Lutheran and Virgin Valley plays at Moapa Valley.

The state semifinals will take place on Saturday, Nov. 16, at one site in the north and a site in the south.

The Lowry volleyball team, who won just one league game last year, finished 9-7 in the Division I-A North this fall and earned the No. 4 seed. The Lady Bucks travel to Dayton on Saturday to face the host Dust Devils at noon. Elko and Truckee play in the other semifinal at 2 p.m. The championship is set for 4 p.m.

The two finalists qualify for the NIAA State Volleyball Championships to be played at Green Valley High School in Las Vegas on Friday, Nov. 15, and Saturday, Nov. 16. The last time Lowry played in the state tournament was 2006.
