WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School football team is the last Humboldt County squad to be playing this fall. The Buckaroos travel to Las Vegas to face Faith Lutheran at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals of the NIAA Division I-A state playoffs.
Lowry enters the game at 10-1, with the Buckaroos coming off a 34-15 win over Elko on Friday night in Elko.
Faith Lutheran is 11-1 on the season and beat Desert Pines 48-41 on Friday night in Las Vegas in a Division I-A South semifinal.
The Crusaders have won 10 games in a row after starting the season 0-2 with a 35-7 loss to Lutheran (Colo.) and a 26-20 overtime defeat to Virgin Valley in overtime. The Buckaroos have won five games in a row and have outscored their opponents 198-54 in that span.
This is the first-ever matchup between Lowry and Faith Lutheran in football. The Crusaders are coached by Vernon Fox, a former NFL player for San Diego, Detroit and Washington.
If the Buckaroos win they will play the winner of the Moapa Valley and Churchill County for the state championship game on Saturday, Nov. 23.
The state championship game is set to be played at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno at 6 p.m. However, if there are two southern teams playing in the title game, it will be moved to a site in southern Nevada.
Lowry last played in the state championship game in 1992 in Las Vegas, losing to Moapa Valley 17-0.[[In-content Ad]]
