WINNEMUCCA - After reaching the state semifinals for the third consecutive season, and setting a school record for wins, the Lowry High School football team was rewarded for its success on the field with a number of all-league selections.
The Buckaroos had six players named to the Division I-A North first-team chosen by the league's coaches, including quarterback Calvin Connors. The junior was 71-of-111 passing for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns. In addition, he had 697 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.
Joining him on the offensive side of the ball was running back Brandon Okuma. The junior had a team-high 949 rushing yards this fall to go with 10 touchdowns.
Cody Andersen made his way on to the first team at offensive lineman.
Three Buckaroos including Michal Arenas (linebacker), Michael Billingsley (defensive line) and Daniel Pollock (cornerback) were named to the first-team defense.
In addition, Connors was named to the second team as a return specialist and as a safety. Andersen picked up second-team honors as a defensive lineman and punter, while Taylor Martin was named to the second team as a kicker. Robert Stepper (tight end) and Kerry Buckmaster (offensive line) were named to the second-team offense. Donovan Brumm (linebacker) was named to the second team as well.
Picking up honorable mention status for Lowry were Arenas (running back), Okuma (linebacker), Tanner Lecumberry (cornerback), Tytin Johnson (offensive line/defensive line), Luis Cardenas (offensive line) and Trystan Blouir (offensive line).
The Buckaroos went 10-2 this season, including a second-place finish in the Division I-A North at 9-1. Lowry reached the state semifinals for a third consecutive season, losing 43-0 to Moapa Valley.
In other league honors, Truckee's Graham Christian was named the Most Valuable Player, while his teammate Zak Pettit was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Year. Truckee's Bob Shaffer was named the Coach of the Year. South Tahoe's John Cefalu was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Churchill County's Trevor Parsons the Lineman of the Year and Truckee's Pat Shaffer the Coach of the Year.
Truckee went on to win its fourth consecutive state, beating Moapa Valley 34-10
The rest of the first team offense included running backs Tyson Ernst (Churchill County), and Paul Bustamante (Fernley), tight end Cale Backinger (South Tahoe), wide receivers Kyante Wilson (South Tahoe), Dylan Tedford (Churchill County) and JJ Harloff (Wooster), offensive line Josh Joyner (Dayton), Chad Parsons (Churchill County), Travis Bodin (Spring Creek) and Benito Gurrola (Truckee) and return specialist Tyler Griffin (Truckee).
The first team defense consisted of linebackers Dalton Johnson (Churchill County), Julian Aguirre (Truckee) and Erik Wilson (Fernley), defensive lineman Gurrola (Truckee), Ian Fitzpatrick (Spring Creek) and Sylas Conner (Fernley), cornerback Anfernee Sloan (Fernley), and safety Javier Vierry (Truckee) and Sky Barton (Churchill County).
The kicker was Colby Patton (Spring Creek) and the punter was Kevin Montgomery (Fernley).
