Lowry cruises past Sparks and Truckee

Bucks move to 11-1 in league play

It was business as usual for the Lowry High School junior varsity boys basketball team as they went on the road for two games last weekend.

The Buckaroos used a strong third quarter to knock off Sparks 46-31 on Jan. 31 and blew away Truckee 52-22 on Saturday.

"We came out with nice intensity in both games," said LHS coach Jeff Rinas. "I like that we didn't play down to our competition and we came ready to play. It's always tough to go Sparks and play in the Brickhouse."

The Buckaroos picked up seven points from Omar Guerrero and five more from Nathan Lutzow to help build a 14-10 advantage after one quarter at Sparks.

Lowry (16-5 overall, 11-1 Division I-A North) slowly pulled away in the second period and didn't allow Sparks to make a field goal in the eight-minute span. Jared Taylor and Dominic Diaz contributed seven of the nine points as Lowry led 23-13 at halftime.

The Buckaroos put the contest out of reach with a 19-9 run in the third quarter, which included two 3-point field goals from Guerrero. Sparks outscored Lowry 9-4 in the fourth quarter.

Guerrero led all scorers with 17 points and Lutzow added nine. Jacob Von Aspern scored six, Taylor four, Christian Riddle and Diaz three each and Chris Tyree and Jacob Hales two.

"The kids are playing well," Rinas said. "We threw in a box-and-one in practice earlier in the week and used it on some of their guys. For the most part it wasn't too bad. The turnovers were down and I liked that."

Lowry had little trouble on Saturday in its trip to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Buckaroos scored 14 points in each of the first three quarter and held Truckee to two field goals in the first half.

Four Lowry players scored in the first quarter to build a 14-2 lead and that advantage grew to 28-5 at halftime. The Buckaroos led 42-11 after three quarters of play and cruised to the victory from there.

"Again our defense looked good, and it has all year," Rinas said. "We messed around with the box-and-one again against some of their players. I wanted to see how are guys responded in different situations and they did a good job."

Everyone scored for Lowry with Taylor posting 11 points. Guerrero scored nine, Lutzow six, Diaz five, Riddle three and Lane Johnson, Brian Shettler, Trey Marriot, Tyree and Von Aspern two each.

The Buckaroos traveled to Fernley on Thursday and results were not available at press time. Lowry is back on the road Saturday to Fallon to face Churchill County at 12:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
