The Lowry High School cross country team got one last race in last week, as it now turns its attention to the Division I-A North Regional Championships in Reno.
The Buckaroos made their way east on Interstate 80 last Thursday to compete in the Elko Invitational. The Lowry boys finished four with 94 points. Spring Creek claimed the team title with 25 points, Elko was second at 47 and Mountain Home (77) was third.
The Lady Bucks placed fifth with 131, while Spring Creek took home first as well with 23 points. Elko was second at 38 and Wells (85) and Mountain Home (98), were third and fourth, respectively.
"The kids ran pretty well and we haven't rested them yet," said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. "We will start to peak them at the right time, so the workouts won't be as a long. The intensity will be same. They will need time to recover."
Hayden Jeppsen led the way for the Lowry boys, finishing 12th in a time of 18 minutes, 46 seconds. Elko's Timothy Rose beat out teammate Kyler Simpkins for the individual title. Rose stopped the clock at 17:19, while Simpkins was at 17:19.5. Spring Creek had runners finish from third to eighth.
Kobe Fitzpatrick (19:01) and Jonathan Madrid (19:07), a pair of sophomores for Lowry were 16th and 17th, respectively.
Ethan Andrews placed 21st at 19:29, Christopher Kearns was 29th at 20:10 and Devin Dowd finished 30th with a time of 20:11. Chance McAllister (20:20) placed 32nd, Omar Aranjo (20:47.2) was 42nd, Matthew Jock placed 58th at 23:12 and Hunter Albisu was 60th at 23:20. Liam Gallups finished 65th with a time of 24:23 and Braden Thomas was 75th in a time of 28:53.
"Overall, I was pleased with the times," Norcutt said. "With them being rested, I think they can take a few more seconds off. We are running together and I like that. I was really pleased with Braden. He came in during the year and he took about five minutes off his time."
A pair of underclassmen paced the Lady Bucks, as freshman Emily Jock was 27th in a time of 23:56. Sophomore Charice Brown was just two spots back in 29th at 24:11.
"it was good to have Emily back," said the coach. "She had to take a week off with an injury. "Charice was also back, which helped. I am looking for them to bring those times down for the regional.
Seniors Shannon Munk (25:19) and Haley Weber (25:53) were 41st and 44th, respectively. Juniors Camryn Maher (29:06) and Alexandria Ziemer (29:41) were 58th and 59th.
"What was exciting for me, is to see the kids actually racing." Norcutt said. "They are just not out for a jog and they are competing. Shannon made a strong push to beat a Elko runner at the finish line. I don't know if our kids do that if its the last couple of years."
Lowry will race at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno on Friday, Oct. 31, in the Division I-A Regional Championships. The girls run at 10:45 a.m. and the boys start at 1:25 p.m.
The top three teams in each race advance to the state championships in Las Vegas. The top five individuals on non-qualifying teams advance to state as well.[[In-content Ad]]
