After a slow start to the season, the Lowry High School boys soccer team found a remedy with its trip to Dayton last Saturday.
The Buckaroos busted out for seven goals in a 7-2 victory over the Dust Devils to to improve to 1-1 in the Division I-A North.
"Dayton was a little better than I thought they would be," said LHS coach Steve Swanson. "They had about three guys that could play but overall they were not really disciplined. We played much better than we have had. The passing was crisper and defending better. We will find out later this week is we improved or took a step down in competition. The good news is that we didn't play down to the competition."
Roberto Sanchez had a track on two different levels. The senior scored the first, third and fourth goals, which all came in the first half. He also had three assists on the day. Jordan Diaz recorded the Buckaroos' second goal and Steven Cholico came off the bench and scored the first time he touched the ball.
Ariano Aguilar and Weston Irons contributed the final two goals for the Buckaroos. Homero Esquivel added two assists for Lowry.
One of the tough goals Dayton scored was an own goal that went off a Lowry defender and bounced in the net.
"There was some discipline that we had to deal with on Saturday and had to move the lineup around a bit," Swanson said. "I was very pleased with how Homero played. We didn't have our best lineup out there but we had other kids step up."
Lowry traveled to Sparks on Thursday and results were not available at press time. The Buckaroos host Truckee on Saturday at noon. Lowry hosts Elko on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
"Hopefully, we are in the right frame of mind for the two games," Swanson said. "It will tell us where we are at and if we can play with the big boys."[[In-content Ad]]
