WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School boys basketball team will represent Humboldt County this weekend in Las Vegas at the NIAA State Basketball Championships presented by the Farmers Insurance Group.
The Buckaroos finished second this past weekend at the Division I-A North Regional Championships at Wooster High School in Reno. Lowry defeated Sparks 52-48 on Friday night in the semifinals but lost 58-54 to Elko in the championship game.
Lowry will play Desert Pines this Friday at 8 p.m. at Del Sol High School. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. Desert Pines beat Clark 63-59 to with the Division I-A South championship. The Jaguars dropped from Division I to Division I-A this past fall and has a student population of 3,100, while Lowry is around 950. Desert Pines last played in the state tournament in 2002.
Elko will face Clark in the other semifinal game at 4:40 p.m., also at Del Sol High School. The championship game is set for 7:45 p.m. on Saturday at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
In the girls Division I-A state semifinals, Spring Creek, the Division I-A North champions will play Boulder City at 3 p.m. on Friday at Del Sol High School. Elko will face Faith Lutheran, the Division I-A South champions, at 6:20 p.m. The girls championship game will be played at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Orleans Arena.
The Division I state championships begin Thursday at the Orleans Arena with four games beginning at 3 p.m. The girls and boys title games take place at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively, on Friday.
The Division III schools, including the Pershing County boys and girls, set up shop on Friday, with contests beginning a 11 a.m. Their championships will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. for the girls and 12:45 for the boys.
The Division IV schools start their tournament on Friday at 3 p.m., with the first of four games at Chaparral High School in Las Vegas. The girls and boys championship games take place at 2:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., respectively, on Saturday at the Orleans Arena.
