A few weeks ago it looked like the Lowry High School baseball team was a long shot to reach the Division I-A North Regional Championships.
But as the final week of the regular season is upon us, the Buckaroos still have a chance to qualify for the postseason. Lowry won two of three games this past weekend in Fernley. The Buckaroos split a doubleheader Friday, losing game one 8-7 and winning the nightcap 16-14. Lowry defeated Fernley 11-8 on Saturday afternoon.
The two wins put Lowry (11-10) in a tie for fifth place in the Division I-A North with Fernley, but the Buckaroos have the tiebreaker over Vaqueros. Elko (15-6) and Churchill County (15-6) are tied for first and have clinched playoff berths.
Spring Creek and South Tahoe are tied for third at 14-7, but there is a possibility for a four-way tie for third. Lowry hosts Spring Creek this weekend and if the Buckaroos sweep, both teams would be at 14-10. South Tahoe has to go to Fallon to play Churchill County and Fernley faces Truckee. If Churchill County sweeps South Tahoe and Fernley win its three games over the Wolverines, Lowry, Spring Creek, South Tahoe and Fernley would be tied at 14-10.
The Buckaroos must sweep to have any shot at a playoff berth.
Meanwhile, the Lowry softball team saw its chances for a regular season title in the Division I-A North come to an end with three losses at Fernley. The Vaqueros, the defending state champions, swept a doubleheader Friday 5-2 and 13-8 and captured the single game on Saturday 6-3.
Fernley has clinched the league title at 19-2 and will be the No. 1 seed for the regional tournament to be held May 15-17 in South Tahoe. Lowry and Churchill County are both 16-5 and will play each other in the opening round of the tournament. The Lady Bucks hold all tiebreakers over the Greenwave. Dayton needs just one win over Elko to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot.
The Lowry baseball and softball teams close out the regular season this weekend in Winnemucca against Spring Creek. There will be single games on Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m.
