Lowry baseball, softball teams to host opening round playoff series

WINNEMUCCA - The quest for state championships begin this week for the Lowry High School baseball and softball teams with the opening round of the Division I-A North Regional playoffs.

The Buckaroo baseball team concluded its regular season this past weekend at home by taking two of three games from Battle Mountain in Ruby Mountain League action.

Lowry's opponent has yet to be determined with Truckee and South Tahoe playing today. If Truckee wins they would improve to 6-6 and be the No. 5 seed and play at Fernley and Lowry would play Sparks. If the Wolverines lose they will play the Buckaroos and South Tahoe moves up to the No. 5 seed and play at Fernley.

Elko, Lowry, Churchill County and Fernley have the top four spots sewed up. Spring Creek is the No. 8 seed and will play Elko this weekend.

Due to Lowry hosting its annual track and field invitational on Saturday, the best-of-3 baseball series will start Thursday at 4 p.m. The first game on Friday will start at 11 a.m. and, if needed, a third game will start 30 minutes after the first one.

The rest of the series will start on Friday and conclude on Saturday. The winners of the four series will travel to Winnemucca on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, as Lowry will host the semifinals and finals of the regional championships.

The Division I-A North softball playoffs are much easier to figure out, as the second-seeded Lady Bucks will host Dayton beginning on Friday at noon with a doubleheader. A third game if needed, will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. Lowry defeated Dayton 20-0 earlier in the year in Elko during a crossover matchup.

The Lady Bucks traveled to Susanville, Calif., this past weekend and won three of their five games. Lowry defeated Corning, Central Valley and Lassen, but lost to Red Bluff and Enterprise. The Lady Bucks wrap up their regular season today at home against Battle Mountain at 3 p.m.

Fernley, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, will play Spring Creek, Churchill County will host South Tahoe and Elko will take on Sparks in the other three matchups.

The four winners will play in Winnemucca in the semifinals and finals of the regional tournament on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11.[[In-content Ad]]
