Lovelock Relay youth committee holds fundraiser Sparks Middle School students earn 'Free Dress Day'

LOVELOCK - Marisalena Perez, a 15-year-old member of the Up Cripple Creek without a Paddle Relay for Life team, has organized a fundraiser that not only generates money for the Lovelock Relay for Life but also gives Sparks Middle School students a "Free Dress Day."

"I like to help out the community anyway we can, so when Marisalena approached me I was very excited for the opportunity for Sparks Middle School to help the Relay for Life team," Principal Kevin Carroll told the Lovelock Review-Miner.

Sparks Middle School students must wear uniforms. Perez, who is also the Lovelock Relay youth chair, and her youth sub-committee thought that the students at their former middle school would pay to be able to wear their regular clothes to school for a day.

It looks like they were correct. Carroll said he estimates about 400 of the students will participate in the "Free Dress Day," which is scheduled for May 21 - 22.

"I thought it would be a great fundraiser for Relay to charge students $2 to wear their regular clothes and all the money raised would be donated to Relay," Perez said.

"Mr. Carroll was very supportive of the fundraiser and did not hesitate to say yes when I asked him," she added.

The students at the middle school will pay $2 for a wristband that will allow them to wear their regular clothes on the specified days later this month.

"Sometimes the students like wearing their regular clothes for a day rather than their uniform, which makes students willing to pay $2 to wear regular clothes," Perez said. "I also think a lot will sign up because students will be willing to donate money to Relay for Life to help raise money to help cancer research."

Perez is a sophomore at Wooster High School and has been the Lovelock Relay Youth Chair for two years.

"My reason for becoming youth Lovelock Relay chair is my Aunt Valaree Olivas. (She) mentioned it to me and I liked the idea of helping our team raise more money for Relay to help find a cure (for cancer) while allowing my generation to get involved in fundraising," Perez said.

Her other sub-committee members are her brother, Santiago Perez, and cousin, Yajaira Rios. All three have been working hard, raising funds to help find a cure for cancer, Up Cripple Creek without a Paddle team member and Lovelock Relay for Life co-chair Valaree Olivas said.
