LOVELOCK - The Wells Fargo Relay for Life team has been part of the Lovelock Relay scene since the beginning in 2007. Team captain Jennifer Hill said they first began with the event because the bank employees thought it was a good way to give back to the community, but the reasons have expanded since then.

"The annual event has opened up a network of contacts and information for cancer patients here in our own community," Hill said.

She mentioned the Look good Feel good program that helps patients with wigs and make-up to make them look and feel good while going through cancer treatments. She said that because of the event they have found out about programs that provide gas vouchers and free rooms for those who need to travel.

"These are programs that have helped our local residents. We probably wouldn't know of them if it weren't for the Lovelock Relay being so well supported," she said.

The bank has been the official Lovelock Relay for Life treasurer since 2008.

"We just thought that was a good fit for us," Hill said.

In addition to being the team that makes change at the overnight event, they have provided a convenient way for all the teams to deposit money for Relay as it is made throughout the year.

The team is now 15 members strong. Hill is the captain; other members are Melissa Patrick, Shelly Iniguez, Andrea Rhodes, Karina Acosta, Sherry Knight, Haley Eldridge, Barbara Knisley, Laura Milich, Jesse Katsaris, Brandon Portillo-Garcia, Zena Garcia, Rhonda Garcia, Brandi Garcia and Analeyesia Garcia.

"We have all been touched by cancer in one way or another and we want to help make a difference. When you hear on the news about a new treatment for cancer or new information that will help scientists in finding a cure, you can say, 'Yeah, I helped with that,'" Hill said.

In addition to their treasurer duties, the team has raised money for the American Cancer Society with their Tip-a-Teller fundraiser at La Casita restaurant last month and is currently holding a Scentsy products raffle at the bank. The winners will be drawn at the Relay overnight event on June 22.

During the overnight event the team will provide change for those needing to break larger bills. The event will not be using the token method for purchasing items from the various camps; this year all camps will accept cash from those supporting the event, Hill said.

They will also be selling items for the Relay store along with food and energy drinks. All proceeds will go to the Lovelock Relay for Life, Hill said.
