LOVELOCK - The Lovelock Country Quilters are having a one-day quilt show on April 14 at the Pershing County Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many quilts and quilted items will be on display at the show.
One unique quilt will be raffled at the show, a representation of an Underground Railroad quilt that the 22-member group has been working on for most of the quilting season. They will also have on display a quilt made in the Pershing County High School colors of red and black. The quilt will be donated to the school's Grad Night committee to be raffled to raise funds for the overnight party at the end of school.
The quilting club has been active for around 25 or more years, said member Jeanne Munk.
"All of us are striving to keep this art form alive," Munk said.
The group pursues many aspects of quilting and donates most to charitable causes. Every year since 1991 the Grad Night committee has been the recipient of a quilt to raffle to raise funds for the Grad Night school party.
In April the seamstresses stitch together cloth books that are donated to St. Mary's Children's Hospital. Then in September they start making their cancer hats that are given away locally and taken to the Reno Cancer Institute at Renown Regional Medical Center.
The quilters hold meetings on the first Thursday of the month at the Pershing County Community Center from September to May at 9:30 a.m. Each month one of the members presents a new workshop on color patterns, new quilting blocks or a new time-saving technique.
"I've been doing this a long time, but I'm always learning something new," Munk said.
They also meet on Mondays at Creekside Variety to work on special projects. Dues are $10 a year and the club is always looking for new members, Munk added.
"We are open to all levels of ability. Everyone is really great about helping each other," said quilter Judy White.
White is a relatively new member of only a few years. She said she joined the club to meet new people and is hooked on quilting now.
The quilt show is on April 14 and will showcase the Grad Night quilt and the Underground Railroad quilt. The Underground Railroad quilt will be raffled at the show. Raffle tickets are currently on sale at Creekside Variety on Cornell Avenue in Lovelock or from any Lovelock Country Quilters member.
