Scientists are working on it, but currently there is no substitute for blood. Due to its limited shelf life supplies must be constantly replenished through volunteer donations. During the holiday season colleges, schools and businesses that regularly host blood drives close and families busy themselves with more festive projects. Donations drop while need rises.
According to United Blood Services of Reno (UBS Reno), out of the 40 percent of people eligible to give blood in the United States only about 5 percent do.
The Lovelock Correctional Center quarterly blood drives are generally held over two consecutive days to cover all shifts. During their most recent drive on Nov. 11 - 12 they collected nearly 50 units of blood. It is not necessary to be employed at the prison to participate in the blood drives. According to UBS Reno, the next drive is scheduled for March 17, 2015.
Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh 110 pounds and be in good health. Donors who are 16 must have a signed permission slip from a parent or guardian.
Donors can opt to save time by completing their donation interview online at United Blood Service's website. The 10 - 15 minute questionnaire must be completed the same day as the donation. After completing it, the donor prints out a Fast Track Donation Ticket, which they bring with them to the donation site.
