Longhorn wrestlers compete in Idaho, place 10th Cordova finishes third

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team traveled to Idaho recently to participate in a pair of tournaments.

The varsity team wrestled in the grueling Buhl Indians Invitational, which featured many of the top teams in Idaho. Overall the Longhorns faired well, finishing 10th out of 28 teams.

Tugi Cordova led the way for Battle Mountain with a third-place finish, followed by Chris Johnson with a fourth-place finish.

Tyler Sparks, Erick Haney and David Sanchez recorded 3-2 records and missed the medal round by one match. Alex Gonzalez went 2-2, while Tyler Dunlap was 1-2 over the two-day event. Alvaro Martinez, George Mayberry and Andy Jordan also participated and wrestled tough for the Longhorns.

"All of our guys wrestled well this weekend," said BMHS head coach Mitch Domagala. "We are getting ready for the end-of-the-year run and need to change a few things up, but I feel good about what I see from each and every one of these guys every time out."

The younger Longhorns wrestled in the Twin Falls Invitational. Jonas Norman and Jacob Rochester placed in the runner-up spot in their respective weight classes for Battle Mountain, followed by Oscar Chavira with a fourth-place finish. Luis Tovar and Dillon Thompson missed the medal round by one match. Michael Williams, Stephen Williams, Parker Rochester, Joey Cross, Matt Gerard and Michael Marshall all wrestled as well for the Longhorns.

"These kids keep improving each time out. They need to keep concentrating on the basics. If they do that, then they will have a lot of success coming their way," commented coach Brian Bard.

The Longhorns wrestle in the Kiwanis Invitational in Spring Creek on Friday and Saturday. Battle Mountain will host matches on Friday, Jan. 28, starting at 3 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 29, at 9 a.m.
