BATTLE MOUNTAIN - In an afternoon where baskets were hard to come by, the Battle Mountain High School junior varsity boys basketball team lost 33-24 to its rival Pershing County on Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Battle Mountain.
"We just had trouble making a shot," said BMHS head coach Worth Nelson. "Neither team shot the ball very well and the score showed that."
Pershing County used two 3-point field goals to build a 10-4 lead midway through the first quarter, with Battle Mountain picking baskets by Blake Dorian and Alec Liebhardt.
Both schools found it tough going on offense in the second quarter, scoring four points apiece. Ivan Chavira and Toliver Rogers each had two points in the period.
Pershing County broke the game open after the halftime break, with a 14-3 run to lead 27-13, but Battle Mountain was able to cut the deficit to 11 to start the fourth quarter on a 3-point shot by Dorian.
A bucket by Regan Knight and a free throw from Damian Wilson cut the Pershing County lead to 29-24 with 1:23 to play. However, the Longhorns went scoreless in the rest of the way as the Mustangs scored the final four points of the contest.
Dorian, a freshman, led Battle Mountain with 11 points. Knight, Rogers, Chavira, Alan Rangel, Worth Nelson and Tristan Hanyon each had two points and Wilson one.
Battle Mountain was scheduled to play a non-conference game in Carlin on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Longhorns begin the new calendar year on Friday, Jan. 4, with a trip to Lovelock to face Pershing County at 4:30 p.m.
