The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca District, Humboldt River Field Office, has completed a Determination of NEPA Adequacy (DNA) to review existing NEPA documents related to impacts associated with Newmont Mining Company's (NMC) Lone Tree Mine Expansion - Brooks Project. The proposed project is located approximately 27 miles southeast of Winnemucca in Humboldt County, Nev. Before the BLM issues a Decision Record, the public is invited to provide substantive comments on the DNA until the comment period ends Oct. 16, 2014.
NMC proposes to expand their existing operations at the Lone Tree Mine to include the Brooks project. The Brooks project is located approximately 1.5 miles southwest of the current Lone Tree Mine plan of operations (plan) boundary. Under this project, the plan boundary would be modified to include the Brooks project area. The existing heap leach pad and ancillary support facilities within the current plan boundary at lone tree would continue to be used.
The proposed project would include the following major components: one open pit (the "Brooks Pit"); three waste rock storage areas; laydown areas; haul and access roads; and exploration-related disturbance. The total surface disturbance would be approximately 229 acres. This represents a 5.4 percent increase to the existing surface disturbance associated with the Lone Tree Mine.
The DNA and maps are available on the NEPA Register through the BLM's ePlanning website located at http://on.doi.gov/1BvkjXM. A copy of the DNA is also available for public review during regular business hours at the Winnemucca District Office.
