Lois Ueland Smith

3/2/1934 - 3/3/2014

Lois was taken to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on March 3, 2014 while residing in San Diego.

She was born Lois Florence Dey to Ernst and Emily (Bassett) Dey on March 2, 1934 in St. Paul, Minn.

Lois completed two years of college in pursuit of her teaching credentials as she has always had a deep love and adoration for children.

On June 21, 1952, she married Norman Ueland in Grand Rapids, Minn. Shortly after they married, they relocated to the Flathead Valley in Montana where together they raised their five children: Wanda, Gary, Randy, Steven and Susan. They were married 49 years prior to Norman's passing. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Wherever life took her; from Minnesota, Montana, Florida and Nevada, Lois was always a social butterfly with a deep devotion for family, friends and church. She kindled numerous friendships in her life's journey. She enjoyed playing cards, games, working crossword puzzles, or reading a good book. She was always just a phone call away. Lois was a talented artist and took several adult education classes in Kalispell including calligraphy, pastel/charcoal/watercolor art as well as stained glass classes. She worked as a teacher's aide at Somers Elementary School for 21 years prior to her retirement. While employed at the school, she shared her calligraphy talent by completing various school-related documents for the students. After she retired, she volunteered at Kalispell Regional Hospital as a "candy striper" and volunteered as a tour guide at Conrad Mansion Museum in Kalispell.

On May 7, 2001, she married Howard Smith in Pensacola, Fla. She was an active member of Ensley United Methodist Church. She worked with handicapped children which brought her joy.

She moved to Nevada to help care for our brother, Gary. Lois was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Battle Mountain. She volunteered to assist with the church preschool. She ate lunch often at the senior center in Battle Mountain, making many friends there. For over 60 years, she actively changed the lives of many.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Emily; husbands, Norman Ueland and Howard Smith; brothers Bill and Dave; sister Cindy and son Gary. Survived by sisters Dana Hellyer and Fritzi Gunn; brothers, Mike and Rick.

The surviving children are Wanda, Randy, Steve and Sue. She is survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and her beloved cat Tito.
