Locals gear up for Nevada's 150th anniversary parade

Who will build Humboldt County's entry?

The call is going out for Humboldt County organizations and/or individuals willing to commit some time and effort to build a Humboldt County entry for the Nevada 150th anniversary parade in Carson City.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has urged each county to put an entry in the parade, and there are many counties smaller than Humboldt County who are really "going after this with gusto," said Commissioner Jim French.

Humboldt County Commissioners discussed talking with Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority board members about pooling their resources to put together some grant money to help pay for construction and transportation of an entry for the parade.

WCVA Director Kim Petersen noted a major challenge will be transporting a float or entry to Carson City and getting it there intact. "It would have to be put in a semi trailer or something," he mused.

"I think whoever might take this forward will need some help," said French. The commissioners talked about contacting the school district, City of Winnemucca, and service organizations or businesses throughout the community to build interest and ideas.

County Clerk Tami Spero remembered that the state's 100th birthday was a "pretty big deal" around Winnemucca and that her mother and others dressed in period costumes as part of the celebration. She said there were five major sponsors involved in the centennial celebration.

An application for parade entries will be out from the state soon laying out the theme and requirements for parade entries. Since French brought the issue to the meeting, he was given the job of putting together an organizational meeting with an all-call for interested folks to get together for an idea session.

That meeting date and time will be announced, when set.[[In-content Ad]]
