Local wins Reno/Tahoe Open Birdie contest

LOVELOCK - What are the odds of being the closest out of 75 people of guessing the amount of Birdies at the Reno/Tahoe Open?

Lovelock resident Judy Osmun played the Birdies for Charity contest at the Reno/Tahoe Open, which took place Aug. 2 through 5. She guessed that there would be 1,500 birdies at the R/TO and came the closest to the actual 1,458 birdies that were made.

Birdies for Charity is one of two charities operated by the R/TO. The other is the U.S. Bank Chip in for School, which supports the Washoe School District.

According to its website renotahoeopen.com the Reno/Tahoe Open Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1999 to raise money to operate the R/TO PGA Tour. When the Foundation has reached its operational goals it supports other Northern Nevada charities.

"It is golf but the main opportunity is to raise money for the community," Birdies For Charity Coordinator with the Reno-Tahoe Open Foundation Haley Duffrin said.

This year Birdies for Charity supported 10 charities, 75 people entered the contest to raise $4,800 for the various charities.

Osmun played for the Lovelock Relay for Life. She pledges a penny per birdie bringing her pledge to $15.

"This is the second year we have participated in the R/TO's charity event. Last year we raised $130 for Relay. This year we raised $35 with only two donors, so it is pretty cool that one of our donors won," Relay for Life Co-Chair Valaree Olivas said.

Osmun won a 32" Emerson LCD HDTV.

"I never thought I would win anything. I was just donating to my Relay," Osmun said.

Other charities represented in the contest include First Tee of N. N, For Kids Foundation, Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, Give Hope Foundation; Make a wish Foundation of Northern Nevada and the Susan G Komen Foundation.

Last year there were 1743 birdies at the R/TO.
