Local teenager killed in I-80 rollover

WINNEMUCCA - A local family of five was travelling west on Interstate 80 near Fernley on Saturday morning when their SUV rolled over and ejected 16-year old Yesica P. Juanes, who sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Jose Cruz Juanes-Chavez was driving the black Ford Expedition carrying his two daughters, son, and the children's mother when he lost control and the SUV began to travel toward the median. According to the NHP, a light snow had fallen earlier that morning.

NHP said Juanes-Chavez and Hortencia Gonzalez-Ruiz, their daughter Deyanira, and son Oscar received various injuries in the crash, but have all been discharged from Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Both parents were properly restrained; however, the three children were not utilizing their seatbelts, according to the NHP.

NHP urges motorists to be certain seat belts are worn by all occupants riding in a motor vehicle and to adjust driving habits according to the current roadway and weather conditions.

According to NHP, speed too fast for conditions is generally the most common cause of crashes during times when roadways are wet or covered with snow or ice.
