Humboldt Composite Squadron is so proud of Col. Leon Franklin and his part in the historic fight into Son Tay. His story was told in an earlier issue. In addition other members have made outstanding and interesting contributions to our community and Civil Air Patrol.

It was a banner year (2013) for one of our squadron members, 2nd Lt. Rick McComb. McComb was awarded the Communicator of the Year by the Nevada Wing. In his civilian job at Humboldt General Hospital he was selected as one of the Employees of the Year for his work in establishing and upgrading the Information/Technology System. Countless hours were spent by McComb programming radios and instructing both cadet and senior members on the proper use of the equipment.

2nd Lt. Jim Moore was promoted to his present rank on Nov. 12, 2013. With his expertise in radio operations he designed and implemented a new antenna. Moore made the Communications Center safer by attaching the communications antenna to the pole to withstand the winds in northern Nevada.

He also saw to it that a fixed ground was completed properly protecting our equipment from thunderstorms.

Major Stan Rorex owns a 1941 N3A1 White Halftrack which he bought in 1976 at the Rye Patch Ranch. The engine is a Hercules Flathead Six and the gas mileage is about a gallon for each one half-mile it travels. It has one quarter-inch armor and a windshield that's a half inch thick.

This is very similar to the half-track that Gen. George Patton had in World War II. If you have ever seen the movie Patton with George C. Scott then you will see what this fighting armored vehicle could do in war. Rorex says it's a project that he continues to improve upon. Just about every parade in Winnemucca has a new cargo from grandchildren to veterans with Rorex at the wheel.

Rorex for saving a piece of history so that others never forget the sacrifices that others did for our great nation. What a treasure to have history some alive.
