BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Nonprofits and similar organizations in the community work hard to provide residents with necessary services. There are many challenges for rural philanthropic organizations; much of these hardships fall on funding, engaging volunteers and rallying community support.
Jacob's Well and local nonprofits/social service organizations have collaborated in recent months to make a positive impact in the community.
Frontier Community Coalition awarded Jacob's Well a $2,000 grant to implement the Life Choices Project, a six-topic series throughout 2013.
February's topic reflected the national monthly campaign for teen dating violence awareness. Teen dating violence and domestic violence education cover many of the same situations and material.
An average of 22 youths participated over the course of the three-day series. The goals for the project and Lander County's Committee Against Domestic Violence (LCCADV) mission overlap which made a perfect opportunity to work together for this initiative at the youth center.
The committee donated marketing novelties (backpacks, lanyards, keychains, lip balm). Scrap Domestic Violence donated brochures, posters and cards as well.
Youth were educated on the topic, relevant discussion resulted, and young people in our community know where to go to find help and other resources should they ever find themselves or someone they love in a situation of domestic violence/teen dating violence.
"This collaboration was an opportunity to raise awareness of resources available to our community. Thank you to all the volunteers that make these critical events so successful," said Sarah Edgar, board chairperson for LCCADV, about contributions to Jacob's Well Life Choices Project.
The Lander County community health clinic participated in a statewide photo contest organized by Immunize Nevada during the 2012 flu season.
Photos were submitted in six categories: family, teens, seniors, pregnant, best Nevada sports fan and best Nevada workplace. Two of the photos submitted by the local clinic were selected.
Community Health Nurse Brenda Keller, RN, and Reita Newgard, AA, from the Lander County Community Health Clinic, won $300 worth of VISA gift cards for participating in the "Give Us Your Best Shot" photo contest.
They passed on their winnings to Jacob's Well Youth Center and will be used to purchase Microsoft Office licenses for the workstations that Newmont Mining Corporation donated last October.
"We are thrilled that Lander County Community Health Clinic shared their prize from Immunize Nevada's Give Us Your Best Shot Photo Contest with Jacob's Well Youth Center," said Katie Nannini, Immunize Nevada assistant director. "As part of our mission, we really work toward supporting other organizations throughout Nevada, and it's so rewarding to see community partners work together and support one another as well."
"Immunizations are one of Lander County Community Health's success stories. Our children and neighbors are immensely healthier due to vaccines that prevent diseases. Building collaborative relationships with partners such as Jacob's Well is another success story," said Keller. "Although our office won this award, our community as a whole is a winner, because of relationships forged between organizations within the community."
Lander County Community Health has also partnered with Frontier Community Coalition, Jacob's Well Youth Center, Lander County Sherriff Office, Lander County Youth Team and Battle Mountain General Hospital to bring Lander County a Prescription Drug Round Up event on April 27.
Two sites will remain open simultaneously from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Southern Lander County residents can drop off at the ambulance station in Austin and northern Lander County residents can drop off at Jacob's Well Youth Center in Battle Mountain. Prescription drug abuse is one of the fastest growing drug problems locally and nationally, particularly among youth.
This event has been organized to reduce the availability of prescription drugs in the community by providing citizens a safe way to dispose of any unused and unwanted medications.
Prescription, non-prescription (over the counter) and pet medications in pill, liquid or cream form will all be accepted as part of the prescription drug round up.
If you have any questions about this particular community initiative, please contact Keller at (775) 635-2386.
The Battle Mountain Arts Presenters (BMAP) is hosting Missoula Children's Theatre April 1 - 5 at the Battle Mountain Civic Center. All youth in the community are encouraged to try out. Permissions slips will be distributed at all the schools the week before spring break.
BMAP is organizing an additional workshop for Jacob's Well youth. "BMAP is excited to offer a workshop to the youth at Jacob's Well," said Ami Rogers, of the Battle Mountain Arts Presenters. "Typically, the workshops take place in selected classrooms during the school day, but with students out for spring break this is the perfect opportunity to offer the workshop to a wider group of kids who might become more interested in theatre."
Jacob's Well volunteers and leadership are very grateful to be collaborating with these local organizations to ensure our youth are afforded opportunities to grow emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually.
The following organizations' recent financial contributions are significant to Jacob's Well and ensure the doors remain open for the youth: Newmont Mining Corporation and their generous employees by way of the Legacy Fund, Maverik, Port of Subs, Hilltop Baptist Church and Wells Fargo Foundation.
