Local motel surprises Humboldt Volunteer Hospice with donation

WINNEMUCCA - Just when the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice thought the community couldn't get any more generous, the Holiday Motel showed up.

The motel was replacing the older furniture in its rooms with new items, "and they, in turn, donated those items to us," said a grateful Sherry Smith, executive director of the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice.

According to Smith, Holiday Motel Manager Helen Desrosiers oversaw the donation of several night stands, desks, tables and pictures to the Frugal Flamingo, the hospice's thrift store.

"We would like to say thank you to her and her staff at the Holiday Motel for this large donation," said Smith.

Of course, the items didn't last long at the store. "Our customers anxiously purchased them as soon as they brought into the store by our volunteers," said Smith.

She laughed, "It seems like our customers have radar; they always seem to know when there's a really great deal."

Smith said the donation is so meaningful to her organization as they honor and support individuals in the Humboldt County community who are suffering from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness.

Because hospice care is provided at no cost to patients, Smith said funding must come from other sources, like generous community members, businesses and organizations.

"We are always so grateful for that generosity," she said. "I don't know why we ever feel worried about our situation because this community has shown us time and time again that they will not let us down."
