Chris and Sharon Kassity own several McDonald's in addition to the one here in Battle Mountain. They formed the Kassity Family School Fund in 2009 in an effort to help ensure that essential school programs and extracurricular activities remain available to school-aged children.

With federal funding continually being cut and reduced, schools across the nation are being forced to go without supplies, remove programs and cut extracurricular activities from their curriculum. With their own children attending school in Carson City, the Kassitys saw first-hand how much of an impact these lost funds have on the children. They created the fund to help schools bridge the gap that loss of funding has caused.

This program is a great way for the schools to raise extra money that can be used for whatever they need. In addition to the 100 percent promotion, McDonald's also donates 25 cents per selected menu item ordered to the school of the purchaser's choice year-round.

Battle Mountain High School (BMHS) was the first local school to join the program a couple of years ago. Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School (ELES) got involved several months ago. Both schools participated in the first of the year's 100 percent fund-raiser back in January. BMHS was able to generate $321.15 and ELES collected $610.33 in only a couple of hours.

Battle Mountain McDonald's Manager Ana Martinez said that she looks forward to holding these special promotions because she realizes how much they help out the local schools. She also said she truly enjoys seeing how excited some of the younger kids get when they visit the restaurant and name their school.
