WINNEMUCCA - Local tourism officials and volunteers will team up this weekend to help run the betting windows during one of this area's most long-standing and successful events.
The Winnemucca Mule Show and Races is scheduled for today through Sunday, June 1-3, at the Winnemucca Events Complex, and volunteers from the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice have agreed to man the pari-mutuel betting windows on Saturday and Sunday.
This weekend, some of the world's most famous racing mules make the trip to north-central Nevada before they kick off a five-month racing odyssey that includes the country's most famous quarter horse tracks, including Del Mar, Pomona and Los Alamedas.
Humboldt Volunteer Hospice Executive Director Sherry Smith said her group could not refuse the chance to pair up with the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority this weekend.
"We are always looking for ways to fundraise in order to better meet the needs of this community's chronically and terminally ill residents," she said. "Plus, this is a fun event with a great history and a promising future and we are happy to be able to help."
Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority Director Kim Petersen said he is very grateful to the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice for their willingness to help. "We have really enjoyed our relationship with this group," he said. "They have been a big help to us over the past years."
