Local Family Resource Center and Regional Food Bank join forces to help those in need

The Battle Mountain Family Resource Center would like to thank the Food Bank of Northern Nevada for partnering with the Resource Center to bring food to eligible local residents, who are in need, at no cost to the residents, the community, nor to the Family Resource Center.

Through the Food Bank's Parking Lot Distribution and their Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), the Food Bank uses the Resource Center's volunteers and facilities at 470 S. Broad St. (about a block N. of the Civic Center on the opposite side of the street), to distribute food to those eligible residents.

Each food box contains about 30 pounds of canned meat, vegetables, fruit, cereal, pasta or rice or potatoes, evaporated or dry milk, dry beans or peanut butter and cheese. Infants will receive formula and/or juice, depending on the child's age. Those interested in participating in the CSFP Program may be asked to provide the following: WIC referral form, birth certificate, proof of residency, and current documentation from Public Assistance agencies. Participants will also have to meet the CSFP income guidelines.

Requirements to qualify for the Parking Lot Distribution are similar to the above. The Parking Lot Distribution is held in Battle Mountain at the Family Resource Center on the third Friday of each month. Food is handed out starting at twelve thirty and lasts until one thirty. The Family Resource Center keeps any items left over to be able to hand out to qualified beneficiaries of the Family Resource Center that were unable to make it on that Friday. As with all of the aid given out at the Family Resource Center, those beneficiaries have to fill out paperwork to indicate that they are qualified to receive the food.

Serving our Seniors

The Battle Mountain Family Resource Center and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada also join together to remind everyone that our very valuable resource, older Americans, takes center stage with programming from several Northern Nevada agencies. In addition to the Battle Mountain Family Resource Center, the Food Bank works with the likes of the Continuum and Washoe County Senior Center, and the Assistance League, just to name a few. The seniors that the food bank serves can get help through the CSFP program and by connecting with any of our partner agencies. We are cognizant that seniors are prone to the "gap" of missing meals and making financial choices to skip meals in order to afford necessities like insurance, housing and medications. The mythic "happy retirement" is not happy for all due to a myriad of causes such as inflation, loss of market share of retirement savings, health problems and family struggles.

Can you make a difference? Yes. When you donate $1, the Food Bank can purchase four meals - those are then distributed through their direct programming or through their partner agencies such as the Family Resource Center.

Helping to feed residents in need is just one way the Battle Mountain Family Resource Center works to serve our community and aid in trying to provide a safety net for everyone who is down on their luck.[[In-content Ad]]
