Local church rallies community

Random acts of kindness are encouraged

LOVELOCK - New Life Fellowship Church in Lovelock is sponsoring a Back-to-School giveaway, Aug. 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pershing County Courthouse Park.

The church is planning a hot dog barbeque, along with giving out backpacks, school supplies, clothing and haircuts to help students and parents who may not be able to afford those things right now.

"We want to demonstrate God's love with acts of kindness to impact our community," Pastor Chris Wenzel said.

The impact to the community is not just in providing for those who don't have that much, he said, but in how these "random acts of kindness" have a collective impact for the better on the community as a whole.

"It's contagious," Wenzel said.

"It's not something the church is doing by itself. We just engaged the community to help each other," said the pastor's wife, Stephanie Wenzel.

She said she was blessed to see the offering of love from the community in the form of clothing from Second Chance Thrift Store, backpacks and school supplies from the Lovelock Correctional Center and a generous donation from Coeur Rochester.

Wenzel said that she and some others will provide free haircuts, also.

Those in need of backpacks and school supplies need to fill out an application so that the church can have enough on hand Aug. 25. Applications can be filled out at the New Life Fellowship Church on the corner of 12th and Elmhurst. They will also be available at the free summer lunch program in the park this week. The deadline for applying is Aug. 20.
