WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County Library's "Summer Reading Program" might be halfway over but organizers say there's still plenty of time to "Dream Big and Read."
The program kicked off June 8 and will wind down with a final Awards Party on Aug. 3.
"But we still have well over a month and we invite all our local youth to join with us and read," said Humboldt County Children's Librarian Jessica Carver.
Carver said over 400 children between the ages of 2 and 12th grade have signed up for the annual summer program that provides bounteous rewards for kids' page turning.
Plus, she said July is packed with activities and crafts that will help stave off the summer doldrums.
Teddy Swecker and Rae Edwards will present "Dreams & Such" on July 10, a Tie Dye craft will follow on July 13. The rest of the month will see Fingerprinting, Candles and Votives, Suncatchers and Kaleidoscopes and the chance to Make a Lap Quilt.
Plus, children are invited to watch Monsters,Inc. and Wall-E for free on July 11 and July 25 respectively; popcorn and soda are $1 each.
Younger children are also invited to get in on the fun. The library welcomes children from 2 to 4 years of age to participate in one of two weekly story time sessions. Toddler Time for 2-year-old children takes place at 10 a.m. Mondays. Story Time for 3- and 4-year-old youngsters is set for 10 a.m. Tuesdays.
Additionally, the Children's Department is once again hosting "Baby Bounce," an emergent literacy program for babies up to 24 months of age. The fun takes place each Thursday beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Even with all the good times children will have over the summer, Carver said the program's underlying purpose is to help students maintain or even improve their current reading skills. She said, "Above all, the idea is to provide an educational - but also fun - experience."
Youth may still register for the program with any library staff member. There is a $3 charge for each participant.
Final time sheets are due by 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in time for the Awards Party, which will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3.
