WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County Library is asking readers to "Dream Big and Read" this summer as the facility kicks off its 14th annual "Summer Reading Program."
The 2012 Summer Reading Program will kick off with "Breakfast and a Book!" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, June 8, outside the children's library entrance.
According to Children's Librarian Jessica Carver, the event will include registration for this year's program as well as plenty of other "dreamy" activities. There is a $3 charge for each participant in the Summer Reading Program. After June 8, youngsters may register with any library staff member.
Friday's pancake breakfast is free with Reading Program registration; cost for the breakfast is $1 for non-participating family members.
In all, the library expects well over 600 youth to get involved with The Humboldt County Library, The Humboldt County Bookmobile, McDermitt Branch Library and Denio Branch Library.
Additionally, the library will welcome children from 2 to 4 years of age who will participate in one of two weekly story time sessions. Toddler Time for 2-year-old children will take place at 10 a.m. Mondays. Story Time for 3- and 4-year-old youngsters is set for 10 a.m. Tuesdays.
Plus, The Children's Department will once again host "Baby Bounce," an emergent literacy program for babies up to 24 months of age. The fun takes place each Thursday beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Additionally, hundreds of youngsters are expected to take part in plenty of other summer activities hosted by the library.
Beginning at 1 p.m. each Wednesday from June 13 through July 25, youngsters are invited to participate in a bounty of fun events ranging from crafts to movie afternoons.
Friday crafts will include such fun activities as tie dying, suncatchers, kaleidoscopes and a glow-in-the-dark star mobile - all in an effort to provide youth with a creative outlet.
Other activities such as Babysitter Training, Dreams & Such, and Make a Lap Quilt for those ages 11 to 18 are sure to help area youth beat the summer blahs.
If past years are any indication of what's to come, Carver will expect children from age 2 through 12th grade to read thousands and thousands of minutes over the summer. And if past years are any indication for the youth, they can expect prizes throughout the summer for their reading efforts as well as a very fun Awards Party scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3.
Even with all the good times children will have over the summer, Carver said the program's underlying purpose is to help students maintain or even improve their current reading skills. She said, "Above all, the idea is to provide an educational - but also fun - experience."
