WINNEMUCCA - While many student/athletes are enjoying their Christmas break, the Lowry High School wrestling team continued its grind through a number of tough tournaments with a seventh-place finish at the Sierra Nevada Classic last week in Reno.
The Buckaroos were the highest-finishing Nevada team with 131 points, beating out Reno, Carson, McQueen, Spanish Springs and Spring Creek.
Clovis West (Calif.) won the tournament with 258 points and had two individual champions. Folsom, Calif., and Del Oro, Calif., were second and third, respectively, with 225.50 and 176.50 points. Oakdale, Calif., (156.5) and Servite, Calif. (148.50) rounded out the top five.
The Buckaroos' Beau Billingsley finished second for Lowry at 170 pounds. It's the second consecutive runner-up finish for the junior, who was second at 152 pounds last year.
Eric Brooks (132) finished fourth, Brandon Okuma (152) and Tytin Johnson (195) placed fifth and Aaron Nelson (138) was sixth.
Lowry travels to Nampa, Idaho, on Friday and Saturday for the Rollie Lane Invitational. The Buckaroos finished eighth in the tournament a year ago.
Teams from Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming are scheduled to compete. Lowry and Reno are the only Nevada schools in the tournament.
