WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School swim team closed out its most successful season in school history at the NIAA State Swimming Championships last Saturday in Carson City.
Senior Tori Echeverria provided two sixth-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. Echeverria stopped the clock at 27.93 seconds. Boulder City's Alexandria Hubel won the event at 24.13, while Chaparral's Summer Luchsinger was second at 24.60.
Echeverria was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:10.22, while Boulder City's Rachel Grothe won at 1:01.97.
Senior Matt Ruehl placed sixth in the boys 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:13.57. Truckee's Alex Straw won the event with a time of 56.70 and Boulder City's Braden Gunner was second at 57.24. They were the only two to beat the one-minute mark.
Freshman Kelsea Perkinson placed eighth in the girls 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:23.78. Truckee's Brittney Straw won with a time of 1:06.29 and Boulder City's Rebecca Lelles was second at 1:09.38.
The girls 200-yard medley team finished fifth with a time of 2:12.17, which was nearly three seconds faster than their seed time. Boulder City won the race with a time of 1:51.50 and Truckee was second at 1:57.21.
The girls 200-yard freestyle relay of Perkinson, Kenzie Maddox, Emma Kracaw and Echeverria were fifth as well. The foursome took a second off their seed time and stopped the clock at 1:55.38. They were just .24 seconds behind Faith Lutheran for fourth place. Boulder City won the race by 10 seconds with a time of 1:42.34 and Churchill County was second at 1:52.52.
The girls 400-yard freestyle placed eighth but took off seven seconds off its seed time at 4:33.48. Boulder City led the way with a time of 3:39.70.
The boys 400-yard freestyle squad of Matt Jock, Ruehl, Jiovanni Madrid and Dain Maher placed seventh with a time of 4:08.76, which was eight seconds better than its seed time. Boulder City claimed the race win at 3:08.09 and Sage Ridge was second at 3:38.99.
The boys 200-yard medley relay of Maher, J.R. Perkinson, Ruehl and Leo Avila placed seventh in a time of 2:03.29. The foursome sliced two seconds off their seed time. Boulder City won the race with a time of 1:34.17.
The Boulder City girls ran away with the Division I-A state championship with 193 points. Truckee was second at 97 and South Tahoe (56) and Churchill County (46) were third and fourth, respectively. The Lady Bucks were seventh with 25 points and were three points behind Chaparral.
Boulder City also paced the boys field with 191 points and Truckee was second at 96. Sage Ridge was third at 58.50 and Clark (50) and Virgin Valley (26) were fourth and fifth, respectively. The Lowry boys tied for 10th with Western with 11 points apiece.
