A small number of the Lowry High School cross country team was in Spring Creek last week for the Northeastern Region JV Championships. Five Buckaroos took part in the end-of-the season race, while no Lowry girls ran in the event.
Devin Dowd led the way for the Buckaroos, finishing fourth in a time of 20 minutes, 15 seconds. It was a personal best time for him. Elko's Levi Shelley won the race at 19:38 and Spring Creek's Luke Mabey was second at 19:43. West Wendover's Joel Rodriguez finished third at 19:59.
Chance McAllister made it two Buckaroo runners in the top-10, finishing ninth with a time of 21:03.77, missing out on eighth by .38 seconds. Omar Aranjo (22:08.77) and Hunter Albisu (22:09) were 19th and 20th, respectively. Braden Thomas finished 38th at 28:31.
"It was a good way for the younger kids to end the year," said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. "Devin and Chance had nice races. Hunter really showed up for us and Braden had a personal best. Some of the kids were done racing with this race, but were at practice this week with the rest of the team. That is something nice to see."
Elko won thew team title, Spring Creek was second and West Wendover and Lowry were third and fourth, respectively.
Addison Watson won the girls race in a time of 22:57 and the Indians won the team title. Spring Creek's Alandra Mauer was second at 23:41 and Elko runners were third, fourth and fifth. Spring Creek was second in the team standings.
Lowry will be in Reno on Friday for the Division I-A North Regional Championships at Rancho San Rafael Park.
The Lowry girls along with the rest of the Division I-A North will race at 10:45 a.m. on the 3.1-mile course. The Buckaroo boys will take to the park at 1:25 p.m.
Truckee, South Tahoe, Sparks, Fernley, Dayton, Churchill County, Elko and Spring Creek will also compete.
The top three teams from the Division I-A North and South championships qualify for the NIAA State Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 8, in Las Vegas.
The top five individuals from non-qualifying state meet teams out of the Northern League championship and the top five individuals from non-qualifying state meet teams out of the Southern Region championship meet also advance to the Division I-A state championship meet.
"We have been working the kids hard the past few weeks," Norcutt said. "We have been slowly cutting back. We are going to do our best. You never know what you get at the regional. A runner could have that great day or have that one bad race on the wrong day."[[In-content Ad]]
