Excited kids showed up at the local library in full swing for Fizz, Boom, Read!, a program designed to get youngsters into the reading mode.
The event lasted Aug. 11 - 15 for an hour each day and was part of the library's annual summer reading program, said part-time librarian Clair Hamilton.
Each day revolved around a different theme, such as butterflies and binoculars, and the kids read aloud, were read to and then did crafts on the varying themes, Hamilton explained.
Each child was required to read for 120 minutes during the week in order to earn a T-shirt at the end of the week. Snacks were provided every day as well.
This year's event attracted around 14 kids, the most Hamilton said she has seen at the summer reading program since she began working there three years ago.
"They were really excited," she said. "The goal is to give children the enthusiasm to read so they can enjoy reading and that helps them learn. You've got to read to learn."
Hamilton said the program not only gets kids to read but it helps them learn to set goals and achieve those goals because they work toward getting the T-shirt at the end of the week-long event. She said it also helps them work in a group setting.
"It encourages sharing and helping," she said.
Barrick provided the T-shirts and crafts for the program that was free for kids ages 6 to 12.
Hamilton encouraged everyone to come to the library. Library cards are free and give card-holders access to all varieties of books, audio books, DVDs and the Internet.
"The more people that come, the more books we'll get," she said. "It's a necessary part of the community."
The library in Battle Mountain is a branch of Elko's library. It accepts donations of books, DVDs and audio books.
The library is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. noon to 4 p.m. on Fridays, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and it is closed on Sundays.
