Learn the history of the Mormon Station during presentation at trail center

ELKO - Park Supervisor Suzanne Sturtevant of Mormon Station State Historic Park will provide a free presentation at the California Trail Interpretive Center on Saturday, April 13, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Located along the California Trail, at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Mormon Station grew into one of the first permanent, non-Indian settlements in Nevada.

Sturtevant will discuss the settlement and growth of Mormon Station, the Pony Express, Snowshoe Thompson (the famous Norwegian mailman of the Sierra), the stagecoach driver Hank Monk, the devastating fire of 1910 and more.

The presentation will conclude with information about what is happening in the settlement, now known as Genoa, today.

The California Trail Interpretive Center, operated by the Bureau of Land Management, is located eight miles west of Elko, at Hunter exit 292 off Interstate 80. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
