BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County officials and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released the Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) for Lander County on May 13.
The new information shows areas that will be inundated by the base (100-year) flood as well as the regulatory floodplain. The maps will be used by lending institutions and insurance agents to determine who must purchase flood insurance and the cost of that insurance if necessary.
In addition, the maps will be used by community officials for floodplain management and permitting purposes.
The issuance of the new DFIRMs may directly affect property owners, especially those owning property and/or living in the identified flood hazard areas, according to a news release.
Some property owners may see a change in their flood zone designation or base (100-year) flood elevation.
A public open house concerning the DFIRMs is scheduled for July 9 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Battle Mountain Civic Center.
The open house will be staffed by FEMA, state and county officials to answer questions, particularly those regarding National Flood Insurance Program flood insurance requirements associated with the new maps.
