LCSD releases free, reduced lunch info

The Lander County School District announced last month the sponsorship of the National School Lunch and Free Milk Program for kindergarten.

The following household size and income criterion is used to determine eligibility of children to receive free or reduced priced meal benefits: children from families whose gross income before deductions is at or below necessary levels are eligible for free or reduced priced meals or in kindergarten, free milk. Call the district office for specific numbers.

The "Application for School Meal Benefits" and the "Letter to Parents" have been sent to all homes of children who attend participating schools in the National School Lunch/School Breakfast Program.

A Spanish version is also available.

To apply for free or reduced priced meals, households should fill out the appropriate application form and return it to the school. If you do not have an application and would like one, please contact your child's school.

Parents only need to send an application to one school, even if they have children at more than one school.

For school officials to determine eligibility, the household must provide the child's name, the amount of income each person received last month (gross income before deductions), where the income was earned, the signature of an adult household member and that adult's Social Security number or the word "NONE" if the adult does not have a Social Security number.

If a household receives Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, "Temporary Assistance for Needy Families," or participates in the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservation for a child, that child is automatically eligible for free meals.

If parents do not want these benefits, they will have the opportunity to decline.

Households will receive a notice of the child's eligibility in the mail. If a notice hasn't been received, an application should be submitted to the school.

For more information, contact Ann Morgan at (775) 635-2889 ext. 127 or your child's school.
