LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Nevada lawmaker says he plans to introduce legislation requiring the state to grant pardons to medical marijuana cardholders convicted of the possession or sale of marijuana.
Sen. Tick Segerblom told the Las Vegas Sun that the measure would be a way to forgive Nevadans who operated under a vague law governing medical marijuana and inadvertently became criminals.
Although Nevada voters approved a constitutional amendment allowing medical marijuana more than a decade ago, patients had no legal way to obtain the drug.
Segerbloom helped push a bill through the Legislature earlier this year establishing a regulated system for dispensing medical marijuana to patients with a state-issued medical marijuana card.
The Las Vegas Democrat says because the old system criminalized some Nevadans trying to exercise a constitutional right, it's fair to retroactively pardon patients whose convictions stemmed from an unfair law.
He plans to introduce the bill during the 2015 legislative session.[[In-content Ad]]
