CARSON CITY - April is National Distracted Driving Month, and local law enforcement will be "Joining Forces" from April 1 - 22 to look for drivers not paying attention to the road.
Looking down at your phone, or sending a quick text when driving, can mean running a red light, hitting a pedestrian, or being involved in a deadly accident. In 2011, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 3,331 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver.
Law Enforcement from West Wendover PD, Winnemucca PD, Lander County Sheriff's Department, White Pine Sheriff's Department, Elko Sheriff's Department, and the Nevada Highway Patrol are working together to educate motorists on the dangers of texting and driving, speeding, red light running, and pedestrian safety. Our goal is zero fatalities.
The "Joining Forces" campaigns are funded from grants by the Nevada Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety. "Law enforcement use these grants and team up to really make a difference" says Sgt. Dave Wiskerchen, from the West Wendover Police Department. "It's a great program!"
Scan ahead when approaching intersections. Look for pedestrians, bicyclists, or any other hazard that may cause an accident. Reduce your speed in school and construction zones and make good decisions when driving.
