CARSON CITY - For the third year in a row, the Nevada Supreme Court will celebrate national Law Day with the latest version of its award-winning Internet forum Law Day Live, but 2012 will be different.
This year, Law Day Live will link three Nevada high schools - rather than courthouses, as in past years - for the innovative video forum that will be webcast on the Nevada Supreme Court website (www.nevadajudiciary.us) to everyone with Internet access.
Law Day Live is scheduled for this Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
"Having Law Day Live originate from our schools will provide a much greater opportunity for students to attend and participate," said Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Nancy Saitta. "In fact, we have reduced the number of panel members to facilitate participation by the hundreds of students that are scheduled to attend."
The high schools include Canyon Springs High School in Las Vegas, Damonte Ranch High School in Reno and Lowry High School in Winnemucca.
"Law Day Live will address privacy issues that are of particular concern to today's students," Chief Justice Saitta said. "The event will also emphasize the role of the courts in preserving the rights and freedoms of our citizens."
The American Bar Associations 2012 Law Day theme is "No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom."
"In addition to looking at the role of the courts in protecting our freedoms, Law Day Live will explore how the courts are struggling in these difficult economic times to keep their doors open and provide that service to the public," Chief Justice Saitta said.
A portion of Law Day Live will focus on a privacy rights case that originated in the north-central Nevada community of Winnemucca and went all the way to the United States Supreme Court. Chief Justice Saitta will moderate Law Day Live from Canyon Springs High School, a law program magnet school.
Justice James W. Hardesty will moderate at Damonte Ranch High School.
Sixth Judicial District Judge Michael Montero will moderate from Lowry High School.
Attending the event in Winnemucca will be Hiibel's defense attorney, along with Justice of the Peace Gene Wambolt, who convicted Hiibel, and District Judge Richard Wagner, who ruled on the first appeal in the case.
Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Conrad Hafen, who was the prosecutor in the Hiibel case, will attend Law Day Live in Las Vegas.
In 2011, the Nevada Supreme Court won top honors from the American Bar Association for its Law Day activities, including a Law Day Live webcast that looked at the legacy of John Adams and his belief that all persons charged with crimes should have access to legal counsel.
