Laura Jean Schmidt was born on June 16, 1964 in Dayton, Ohio. She graduated from Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, N.Y. She worked in a number of industries, leaving a substantial foot print at each place. Laura was a long- time resident of Keeseville, N.Y. where she graduated with honors from Clinton Community College and also in Plattsburgh State University in 2011, as a member of Psi Chi.
Following her graduation she moved to Battle Mountain to join Joseph Moskiewicz, who she married on March 30, 2012, in Battle Mountain. Laura worked for the Battle Mountain Band as an environmental director for the Native American community. Laura started her dream job at the Lander County Convention & Tourism Authority as the assistant director in March of 2012 and promoted to the executive director in November 2012. At the time of her passing, Laura was pursuing her Master's Degree in psychology and volunteered at Jacobs Well, domestic violence, Marigold Community Investment Committee and was the treasurer for the Battle Mountain Recreation Committee.
Laura loved her pets, was an avid reader and enjoyed camping, traveling and cooking. Her latest accomplishments were the World Human Powered Speed Challenge, where she hosted bicyclists from eight different countries this year, and was the chair for the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City where our Lander County float was awarded first place. Laura had been working for several months to make this year's Annual Chukar Tournament the most successful ever. The Chukar Tournament was held on Nov. 8 and had the most hunters since its inception. Laura will be remember by all who knew her as a fun loving, outgoing person who always made your day memorable by just having her in your life.
She is survived by her husband Joseph Moskiewicz, her stepson Matthew Moskiewicz, stepdaughter Kathryn (Matthew) King, her mother Constance Burmaster, sisters Lisa Halek, Brenda Burmaster, Christine Burmaster, brother Charles Burmaster and her long time friend Nancy Griffith.
She is also survived by her father Albert Schmidt, her brothers Albert and Mark Schmidt, and many nieces and nephews.
Laura passed away unexpectedly at her home in Battle Mountain on Sunday, Nov. 3. Her Memorial Service will be held at the Civic Center, 625 S. Broad Street, Battle Mountain on Friday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow.
