Lander County School District applies for 21st Century Grant Homework programs targeted

The grant would focus on the before and after school homework programs for grades one through eight at Battle Mountain Elementary Schools, Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School and Battle Mountain Junior High School, said Battle Mountain Elementary Schools Principal Lorrie Sparks.

Jimi Newkirk, Amy Nelson, Lorrie Sparks and Tom Klein wrote the grant that was due June 1 and submitted to the Nevada Department of Education. The grant application is seeking $100,000 for each year to cover the program for three years.

This is the second time the Lander County School District has applied for a 21st Century Grant. The first grant was for five years but had to be renewed each year. The first two years, for each year the district received $125,000 and the following year it received $112,500. In 2011, the program received $101,250 and for 2012 it received $91,125.

The public was asked for ideas to put into the new grant application and Sparks said some feedback was given and most of it revolved around children getting help with their homework so they can enjoy themselves and spend time with their parents once they get home.

John Davis Trucking has been sponsoring the breakfast program and the 21st Century program pays for the person to be there to serve the breakfasts as well as help the kids with homework while they eat.

The new grant will not go toward the breakfast portion, according to Sparks. When the John Davis Trucking money runs out, funding will come from Goldcorp - Marigold to continue with providing breakfast to the students. The breakfasts are available for $1 or at reduced prices if students qualify.

The After School Program gives the students a safe place to go after school to get their homework and reading done and also gives them a chance to enjoy a variety of enrichment activities and field trips. The summer school program focuses on keeping kids going academically and on enrichment.

The 21st Century programs are always looking for volunteers to come and help. Contact Newkirk at (775) 635-2889 or newkirkj@lander.k12.nv.us to volunteer.
