BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority will be holding a geocaching event on June 15 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to showcase the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Shoshone Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) trail.
"The BLM has done a lot of work out there to create these trails so it is for exposure," said Laura Schmidt, executive director of the Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority, who is the main event organizer.
The free event will begin at the Redrock trailhead and will consist of 20 caches on four trails, she said.
The event is not a competition and is just planned as a day for families to get out and enjoy themselves, Schmidt said.
"It is just for a family fun day on the trail," she added.
Maps of the OHV trail are available at the tourism office inside the Battle Mountain Civic Center. Those who would like to participate are asked to call Schmidt at (775) 635-1112.
There will be hotdogs, hamburgers, chips and soda for sale at the event. Bottled water will be given out for free.
This is the first time for the event and Schmidt said she is hoping to hold it annually.
A flea market, which will be a separate event, is also being held that day in the parking lot of Battle Mountain High School and at Elquist Park. Schmidt said she is collaborating with flea market organizer Tammy Conner.
The flea market is being held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and all vendors are welcome, Conner said. Sign-ups will be taken until June 14 by calling Conner at (775) 635-3212 or Shannon at (775) 635-5565.
"Come out and spend the day with us and have fun," Conner said.
Food vendors will be at the park and all others will be in the parking lot of the high school, Conner said. One space is $25 and two spaces are $40. Each space will consist of two parking spaces.
Schmidt said that the Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority is hoping to have a band play that night at Elquist Park.
Those who are coming from out of town to go to the geocaching event or flea market can call Conner or Schmidt for RV parking.
